Dear Friends of Oscar R. Sanchez,

As you may or may not know, Oscar Sanchez GW93 TD97 MArch 00, our friend/ classmate/ colleague, was diagnosed in August 2008 with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Since then, he has experienced months of triumphs, challenges, and physical changes.  You will be glad to know that Oscar remains very much in the center of his life.  Though he is retired (Feb 2009) from his daily work as an architect, he still participates fully in a wide range of interests as a community activist.  You are well aware of Oscar’s determination: an inch of ground that ALS gains upon him is never conceded; he fights the disease with every ounce of his energy.  He has always been a gifted incarnation of architectural endeavor, erudition, and fine cooking, but his daily battle against ALS is a reminder to us all to take the best from life each day.

Friends of Oscar have recently helped to establish a legacy project that bears his name: the Oscar R. Sanchez Scholarship, to be administered by the AIA Colorado Architectural Education Foundation.  Attached to this website below is a document which describes the scholarship.  In summary, it is inspired by Oscar’s own journey, a journey that has taken him across many boundaries – from local roots to international travel, from the football field to the Ivy League, from being an eager participant to being an instigator, from being a student to being a mentor.  Oscar would like to smooth that journey for other students who share his passion for the arts, to help them reach their potential.

We invite you to help Oscar speed their journey along.  The opening balance of the Oscar R. Sanchez Scholarship is $5000 and our goal is to eventually endow this scholarship at $50,000.  All contributions are tax deductible and will go exclusively to funding the scholarship itself.  The first recipient will be selected by a committee of local artists and architects in early April 2010.  Oscar will chair this committee and we look forward to the announcement of the first recipient at the Young Architect’s Award Gala at the Denver AIA on April 9, 2010.

Thank you very much for helping to make this scholarship possible.  Please make your check payable to Architectural Education Foundation and mail to the following address:

Congratulations to Marco Antonio Garcia

With great excitement, the Oscar R Sanchez Scholarship reports that the first scholarship recipient, of what will hopefully be many future recipients, was announced this past Friday April 9, 2010 at the Young Architects Awards Gala, an event for young architects and students put on by the Colorado branch of the American Institute of Architects.

It is a pleasure to name Marco Antonio Garcia as the scholarship recipient.  He receives a travel prize of $1,250 and an internship opportunity at an architect's office.  Marco's selection truly expresses what the scholarship's goals are about:  helping to increase the odds for achievement by providing opportunities to establish connections within the profession.  Marco is a hardworking and dedicated Hinkley High School senior in the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate program who is very interested in architecture, especially in 3D graphics.  He commuted by RTD public bus from Aurora during a recent semester long internship at Slater Paull Architects, located in downtown Denver.  He is noted as a leader by his teachers and peers and shows great promise.  Hopefully his growing group of allies will be of support to him on his journey.  Marco will be attending the University of Colorado this fall.  Congratulations to Marco.

Thanks to the many people who have made the scholarship possible:  the organizers, AEF, ACE, advisors, supporters, family, friends and all who have generously donated to the endowment.
